WASP’S STING

The Latest drawing from Harri Harrison portrays action on the 31st August 1940 when Pilot Officer Arthur Clowes claimed, as probables, two Dornier 17s and one Messeschmitt 110. Based at Tangmere with 1 Squadron, Clowes had a wasp painted on the nose of his Hurricane, and for every enemy aircraft he shot down he painted a stripe on the insect’s body. By the end of the war he had claimed a total of twelve kills.
